Elections are won by the campaign that motivates the most people to show up and vote. Working backwards from a successful election-day effort, we will examine how to achieve victory. We’ll explore the practical elements needed to get more votes: voter persuasion, identification/outreach, voter turnout and registration, campaign and candidate visibility, message dissemination and polling – and the role of an effective volunteer organization. Strategically, we’ll examine campaign message and how to motivate people to vote for us: analyze the electorate, identify and motivate our natural base, messages/themes that persuade voters, contrasting ourselves with our opponents, and the importance of coalition building and endorsements to expand beyond our natural base. We'll also discuss how to “broadcast” our messages to voters (leaflets, ads, public events, social media, and press events—including strategies for working with the media). Finally, we'll look at the infrastructure needed for a successful election campaign: volunteer organization, fundraising and campaign staff. While covering the above topics we’ll dialogue about your challenges and successes and learn from each other. The goal of the presentation is to provide attendees with practical approaches they can take back to their own grassroots election campaign efforts.
