In cities across the U.S. and Europe, people concerned with Palestinian rights are joining with other social justice struggles to push their local elected officials to take action in support of the global struggle for freedom, justice, and equality. These campaigns are part of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Movement and have included ending police exchange trainings between Israel and the U.S.; dropping contracts with companies complicit in Israel’s oppression of Palestinians; and passing resolutions to divest from corporations with sordid histories of human rights abuses, whether against Palestinians or Black, brown, and Indigenous communities in the US. Come learn about how these campaign wins and Palestine solidarity work in general push the overall politics of our cities and open up opportunities for political education and organizing for various communities. Especially in a moment in which the current regime is doubling down on and expanding the state’s oppressive and repressive policies, this session will present lessons we can take from Palestine activism about how we can organize on a municipal level as a way to bypass the federal government’s disregard of human and civil rights, whether by Congress or the White House.
