This panel will explore how organized labor, particularly in sectors at the center of social reproduction, such as teaching and nursing, engage in social struggles beyond what is usually understood as mere workplace concerns. Representatives from nurses unions and organizations around the country will speak about their work at the border and in post-Maria Puerto Rico and how to make sense of it beyond mere “relief” or “humanitarian aid.” Teachers from Puerto Rico and Oaxaca will speak about how in regions marked by exploitation and dispossession, they have have played a key role in articulating forms of collective action to defend the commons and confront authoritarian powers and predatory interests, while fulfilling basic social reproduction tasks in the context of an absent state.
