Language justice and multilingual spaces have become a central piece of grassroots organizing in New York City. We see this in the growth of the organizing base and the level of engagement of predominantly Spanish-speaking communities. In this workshop we will discuss how language justice can be used as a framework and a set of tools that can increase the participation and inclusion of decision-making in the communities most impacted by local decisions/politics.
We will share examples of successful campaigns that have built multilingual movements for justice in NYC and have thus democratized their organizations, community based institutions, and school districts.  We will also share how using popular education we have been able to move institutions away from the concept of Language Access (used in government agencies) which treat community members only as recipients of information, needing to be educated, and assimilated, into language justice, which centers self-determination and power analysis as a key starting point to shift power dynamics.
