Jim Schumacher

Jim Schumacher has 20 years of experience in political organizing and election campaign management at a grassroots level. Running twice for City Council in Burlington, Vermont in the 1980s, he became campaign manager for Bernie Sanders' successful mayoral re-election campaign (1987). He then played a lead role in Sanders’ upset election victory for U.S. House of Representatives in 1990. As Sanders' field manager, Schumacher built and directed a statewide volunteer organization with 1,000 active volunteers, wrote and administered statistically accurate polls, directed voter persuasion/identification and get-out-the-vote efforts, led visibility and leaflet distribution efforts and conducted outreach to key constituencies, including grassroots fundraising. As campaign manager for Sanders' successful re-election bid in 1992, he played a key role in defining strategy, messaging, press relations/outreach and paid media content and design. In addition to his work for Sanders, Schumacher directed successful statewide campaigns in Vermont in the 1990s (U.S. Senate and Auditor) and has managed campaigns in urban America (Rochester, NY). Schumacher’s current focus is assisting left municipalist movements in the U.S. and Italy.
